Nobody spends more time looking for birds in Ohio, and finding them,
than Dan and Doreene. Doreene's post me led to search the Ohiobirds
messages on my browser--something I hardly ever do--about little blue
herons, and I found 76 titled posts about this species here since 2007.
Most I read involved fall occurrences of the young white birds; six
reports were of spring (blue) adults.
One remarkable Ohio report was of 1185 of the (white) immature little
blues in Ohio in July-August 1930 (and who knows how few observers there
were in those days); this was also an extraordinary year for snowy
egrets, which can be mistaken for young little blues. Spring (blue)
birds are much more seldom found, and were mostly seen along the Erie
shore, with a few presumed nests on West Sister Island. In June of 2011
however, here in central Ohio eight+ were discovered, five as late as
6/22. No breeding verified. Go figure. Anyway, it seems there is little
predictable about the occurrences of this species in Ohio, and its
history is spotty at best.
