I stopped at several locations around the southern part of this reservoir north of Columbus and found the first stirrings of migration even as some birds were still singing on territory or feeding young. The beach gull flock was dispersed by early swimmers, but not before I could see 180 Ring-bills, 2 Herring Gulls, and 2 Caspian Terns. Another pair of terns was up around the Cheshire boat launch. For landbirds, the only migrants of note were:
E.Kingbirds - 20 in 2 hours, with the bulk of them (16) being flybys at New Galena Boat launch
BarnSwallows - small clusters of them at many locations
Cliff Swallows - 2-3 were winging down the reservoir, something that many more of them will do later this month. Then, if you stand on the beach or dam, you'll see hundreds in a few hours.
PurpleMartins - small #s at almost every stop, never more than 4, but they were definitely moving
Baltimore Orioles - 3 were scattered around New Galena area, all juveniles
