I was at Wilderness Rd from 9:30 to 10:15am this morning. With all the rain
we have had in the last week, it looks like the peat digging and dozing
operations have come to a halt. In fact, it looks like they are pulling
their pumps out, as two are now parked along the road.

Prior to these rains, the peat pits were totally dry, and have only held a
few wet spots in the last 3-4 weeks. The areas closest to Wilderness Rd are
just about all grown over with weeds 2-3ft high. However, further back,
where the peat digging was taking place, there is now quite a bit of water
standing. Thus there appears to be a lot of shorebird habitat there, though
this area has been severely disturbed in the last two months. Thanks to
this activity, though, the areas are without vegetation and hopefully will
bring in more shorebirds as the season progresses.

This morning, I saw the following shorebirds:
Killdeer - 30+
Spotted sandpiper - 9
Semipalmated sandpiper - 1
Pectoral sandpiper - 1
Wilson's snipe - 3
