While running errands in Gahanna (suburb of Columbus), I stopped to briefly bird a small park (Shull Park) on Monday morning and was treated to the site of an adult Cooper's Hawk leading 2 juveniles on a merry chase along a wooded border of the park. The juveniles were squealing for food, but the adult coyly flew slowly ahead of them, dodging as they tried to grasp its wings or tail. It took a few seconds for me to realize that the adult was apparently 'training' these oblivious juvies in how to pursue & grasp moving targets, and it was quite a neat sight to watch. This might be something for Columbus birders to look for over the next few weeks, as Coops are common here, and have apparently had a good nesting year.
