Following up on Dave Hochadel's sightings of a Plegadis Ibis and a Marbled Godwit last night at Mosquito Lake, we arrived at the Hoagland-Blackstub Road site at about 7:30AM this morning, Tuesday. My wife Denise and I were in good company, with Larry Richardson and Jeff Harvey already there with the Marbled Godwit in their sights. A short time later Larry spotted the Plegadis Ibis. The shorebird habitat is presently near perfect, with a nice variety and hundreds of shorebirds to be seen, along with cranes, waterfowl, egrets, eagles, and numerous land birds in the surrounding trees just to name a few. By the time we departed at about 8:30AM, we recorded 40 species of birds. The location is the northwest corner of Mosquito Lake, about three miles north of SR88, and a short distance north of Mahan Denman Road. Park at the pull-off on the right just south of the double pipes (the tubes) that go under the road. A scope is definitely necessary. I would think these birds could be around for a while. Best viewing is probably in the afternoon and evening.
