A year later and things have not changed, with very little "paying it forward" with new and follow-up sightings to Ohio-Birds. Attached below is a post I did about a year ago on my thoughts on reporting significant bird sightings to Ohio-Birds. Yesterday there were sought after birds in Northeast Ohio at Conneaut, Mosquito, Berlin Lake, and Wilderness Road. To know about all of these sightings you had to search the social networks of E-bird or the numerous Facebook pages. For out-of-state birders looking for rarities while traveling thru Ohio, The American Birding Association Birding News / Ohio Mailing List, which is the same as Ohio-Birds, is where they look. This is true for traveling thru all states. I am speaking from experience. In my opinion, in general, most of the Ohio birding community is not being helpful in letting birders easily and quickly know about noteworthy sightings, and in a lot of cases, not until the end of the day, or even the next day. My present amusement is the fact that The Ohio-Birds mailing list is a service of The Ohio Ornithological Society, and it seems that very few of the prominent OOS members ever post to it. To an old school guy like me, Ohio-Birds is still the most convenient source of information.

Subject: [Ohio-birds] My Conneaut Piping Plover Thoughts

Yesterday, the Ohio birding community was made aware of the easily found Piping Plover at The Conneaut Sandspit on OHIO BIRDS. Today, Saturday, numerous individuals were successful in seeing this bird, as could be seen on other social media sites. I have noticed that only one birder posted their conquest on OHIO BIRDS. It disappoints me that OHIO BIRDS is used to gather bird sightings, but very seldom does the new breed of birder give anything back by posting useful information to OHIO BIRDS. If you use the posted information, you should be responsible enough to contribute in return.
