We’ll feature many of Ohio’s most knowledgeable speakers on the topic, too. Dr. Andy Jones from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Brendan Shirkey from Winous Point and the tag-team of Mark Shieldcastle and Tom Kashmir of Black Swamp Bird Observatory will shed light on the rail populations in Ohio. The evening program, at the O.O.S. Annual Banquet, is none other than Auriel Van Der Laar Fournier, a PhD candidate who grew up birding with the Ohio Young Birders Club.

For those choosing to arrive in Lakeside on Friday evening, Flora-Quest is hosting a free program by Jason Lewis the Refuge Manager from the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Program details can be found at http://www.flora-quest.com/speakers.html

The rare LeConte’s and Nelson’s Sparrows are distinct possibilities at this time, and Lincoln’s and Savannah Sparrows are expected. And while many raptors travel along the north shore of Lake Erie in the fall, migrant Merlins and Peregrine Falcons aren’t deterred by crossing the lake, and it’s the perfect time for them. We should also see some late migrant warblers, and it’s the start of waterfowl migration season. So all in all, we expect to see a wide variety of species on our field trips. Sunday morning birding will be at your own pace. We are offering multiple choices of conservation and birding hotspot locations. These sites will be attended by conservation host organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, Ohio Wetlands Association, Black Swamp Bird Observatory, North Central Ohio Land Conservancy, Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Trust for Public Land, Black Swamp Land Conservancy and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

> In the past, Ohio Ornithological Society members have contributed to many conservation projects through direct donations and the auctions, raffles, and “buy a bird” poster at OOS events. Major grants have gone for land acquisition at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve in Adams County and Meadowbrook Marsh Preserve in Ottawa County. Our Society has distributed over $60,000 from contributions and matching funds.
