My wife and I are casual birders and combine it with photography. We do much of these hobbies from our pontoon boat on Indian Lake and don’t normally post. However, today was an exceptional day and we feel we should share it.
All sightings were from the boat and areas covered include Blackhawk and Lucy Pond, Pony Island and the (so called) game reserve area, and the North Fork Great Miami River. We were out twice and following are the notable sightings.
Morning (8:30 – 13:30)
Belted Kingfisher – 5
Osprey – 5
Great Egret – 6
Great Blue Heron – numerous (always a lot around as there is a large rookery)
Bald Eagle (juvenile) – 3
Sandhill Cranes – 2
Read-headed Woodpecker - 2

Afternoon (17:30 – 19:30)
Belted Kingfisher -3
Osprey – 6
Great Egret -12
Great Blue Heron – numerous
Bald Eagle – 15 sightings consisting of at least 1 adult and 8 juveniles these all seen at the same time in the game reserve area. Unusual in that we’ve never seen more than 4 juveniles at one time. Also, separately one juvenile, probably fourth or fifth year as the head and tail were in the process of turning white.
