The large stack at Chardon High School was crumbling and had to be removed last week. Many staff and students were sorry to see it go, as it hosted hundreds of migrating swifts each spring and fall, and had a breeding population up to 50 after the eggs hatched each summer.

Hopefully they will be able to find other roosts. The chimneys on Chardon square already are well populated, and may be able to accommodate more.
