Diurnal migrants were the order of the day at Alum Creek Lake this morning, with sizable movements of jays, woodpeckers, Robins, and Waxwings. I had stopped by the dam yesterday evening and noticed flocks of waxwings, Robins, and jays grounded by the rain, and figured that the brief clear portion of the morning might allow them to move. Between 8:30 and 10:00 at the New Galena Boat launch area, there was a steady parade of day-flying migrants, including:

Blue Jays - 665+ (small flocks of 15-30 birds spread rather evenly throughout the period)
Robins - 170+
Cedar Waxwings - 165+
N.Flicker - 8
Red-headed Woodpeckers - 6 (3 adults, 3 juveniles)
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 5 (didn't think they migrated, but had 5 different individuals, all flying south and high over the inlet. Perhaps they're learning to get out of northern Ohio in winter.)
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers - 3
Red-br.Nuthatches - 4 (2 pairs that stopped briefly at the point before flying across)
Belted Kingfishers - 3
Chimney Swifts - 6
Bald Eagles - 2 different adults heading south over the dam
Other raptors - 1 Sharpie, 1 Cooper's (this spot has never been much of a raptor funnel)

Hardly any blackbirds (6 Red-wings), larks, bluebirds, or finches; presumably they'll start appearing later in the month. A brief walk around the trails added a few residents and warblers, but nothing unusual. A stop at the beach and visitor's Center on the other (west) side of the lake found flocks of Starlings (250+) and Ring-billed Gulls (320+), but not much else new.
