For those pondering where to bird this weekend, let me suggest you include "The Tubes" area of Mosquito Creek along the north end of Hoagland-Blackstub Road in your plans. After Larry Richardson found a Brant here a couple days ago (and a Northern Shrike just west of the very north end of this road) the Patagonia Rest Stop Effect (where one rare bird is found and then more rare birds are found at the same spot looking for the 1st rare bird) happened as a Hudsonian Godwit was discovered in the same spot as the Brant. We had heard that there were a lot of birds to look through at this location but that seems a bit of an understatement. Here is a link (copy and paste it if you can't click through it) showing the large numbers of birds Jon Cefus & I identified this evening. With the exception of some extra Bonaparte's we added at the Rt 88 causeway, all these birds were counted from the pull-off along Hoagland-Blackstub Road (where the Godwit was tonight) and the east end of Mahan-Denman Rd looking north (where the Brant was tonight).

It is quiet a spectacle of birds and a great environment for the Patagonia Effect to continue to produce more rare birds as more birders check it out this weekend.
A scope is a huge help at this location and lighting will be way better in the evening than morning.
One bird we saw that's not on the eBird list is a beautiful "Storm Wigeon"; an unusual form of American Wigeon with a striking head that is bright creamy white both above and below the green eye patch.
