I was asked to update the listserv that the Holmes County tanagers continue through today, 12/15. The Western Tanager at 8337 Township Road 662 Southwest of Wilmot is extremely reliable. Most people are reporting little to no wait at all to see this bird. The Summer Tanager at 6830 State Rt. 515 can sometimes be gone for an hour or more but still seems to be doing fine today as well even in the extreme cold.Ben Morrison and I did some preparation for tomorrow's Wilmot Christmas Count and were amazed to find zero open water in all our ramblings throughout the circle. Every pond, stream and river we saw was solid ice.Waterfowl should be on the move trying to find open water so Christmas counters should keep an eye (and ear) frequently to the sky to pick up waterfowl.
On that note Emery Yoder reports 165 loons passing over his home in Holmes County just yesterday. We also had about 150 Horned Larks on Harrison Road in southern Wayne County with several Snow Buntings and at least one Lapland Longspur with them.
