In my earlier post I mentioned that I've heard a White-breasted Nuthatch
make an unfamiliar call.. It's actually the "song," and thanks to Liz M.'s
suggestion I found it at Cornell's Macaulay Library. Our WBNU song sounds
like a recording in Ontario in 1966, but the recordings of nuthatch calls
are much more numerous than of song.

I haven't gotten to the RBNU recordings yet..

Subject: Red-breasted Nuthatch call

I was hearing a strange noise from the backyard that at first I thought was
a distressed duck, then I decided it was a neighbor rapidly sawing
something.. Finally located a Red-breasted Nuthatch about twenty feet up in
the maple tree, turning and hopping from branch to branch. I guess it was
its "agitated call," although as usual it didn't really sound like the
recording at Cornell site. (Our White-breasted Nuthatch makes a call in
early spring unlike any recording I've found..)

Still not sure what the RBNU was agitated about, but it carried on for
several minutes even after flying into the pine trees.. Hawk, or cat, or
stale peanuts..
