Today we went to see the Western Tanager that has been coming to a feeder
at 8337 TR662, just south of SR62 and north of Winesburg in Holmes Co. We
talked with the nice lady who lived there and gave her a bag of dried
mealworms. She appreciated that since that is what the tanager is eating.
We parked in her drive across from the feeders and could watch from our car
on this cold, windy day. We waited about 45 minutes for the tanager to
show, and it was there a few minutes for us. Definitely a western tanager,
either a female or a non-breeding male, since my wife thought she saw a
little orange around its face. There were also 4-5 bluebirds that came
regularly and a mockingbird, as well as other standard feeder birds. The
lady said they have also had a red-headed woodpecker and fox sparrow
regularly, but we did not see those. A good way to start 2017! Randy Rowe,
Wooster
