This season is shaping up to be one of Ohio's warmest winters, and it
might be useful to keep an eye on species that we normally don't see at
this time. I was just looking into northern waterthrush records here in
central Ohio, and found the latest I know of stayed in Delaware County
as late as 3 January 2011; Peterjohn (p. 462) however cites one that was
seen at that date in 1998 in Tuscarawas County, and then later there on
15 February!
This winter's forecast is for a record mild season. It is more likely
we'll see birds staying late, rather than birds arriving early of
course, but we could break some records, so keep an eye peeled...if
you're a jaded state lister, you could start an Ohio early list!
