This morning I was joined by a group of fearless birders ( the weather map said we were between waves of thunder storms) for a Prothonotary Warbler Walk at the Hoover Nature Preserve. We restricted ourselves to Area N with an eye to the sky to enable us to dash for the cars if (when) the rains came. The birds had sympathy for us and came out quickly as we walked the trail. We observed numerous Prothonotary Warblers, several of which proved to be showoffs. The Prothonotaries sang from open perches, collected nest material, made trips to several of my nest boxes with one perching on top for better pictures, overall putting on a nice show. We managed to observed three different males with legs bands.

Other species in this small area include, in part, Northern Parula, Yellow-throated Warbler, Warbling Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Osprey, American Coot and Red-headed Woodpecker.  Then the rain began to pick up. Smartly we made a bee line for the cars. As I shut the car door the rain intensified and the thunder began to rumble. For a short walk it had good enough results for those there to head home happy.
