If you're not a lister, you may wish to pass on these pages. I've just
been compiling a list of new species just accepted for the Ohio
list---Allen's hummingbird, black-tailed gull, kelp gull, arctic loon,
neotropic cormorant, great cormorant, reddish egret, crested caracara,
fish crow, Eurasian tree sparrow, Cassin's sparrow, and golden-crowned
sparrow.
Some years--at least ten--ago, we had a free-for-all discussion here on
Ohio Birds in which birders made predictions about which ten species
would be added to the Ohio list in time to come. Twenty offered lists.
As you'd expect from birders, few followed directions. Those who flouted
the rules got the most: Greg Links had 6 of 19, Vic Fazio 6 of 14. Among
those who dutifully reported only ten, Ethan Kistler had 3, as did
Bernie Master. Others included Su Snyder, Brad Wilkinson, Sean Zadar,
Aaron Boone, Bob Foppe, Dave Horn, Haans Petruschke, and John Pogacnik.
Here are the species recorded and votes given: fish crow 6, Allen's
hummingbird 2, neotropical cormorant 4, black-tailed gull 2, reddish
egret 1, golden-crowned sparrow 3, Cassin's sparrow 4, great cormorant
5. I can send the whole list to interested folks.
