The " outbreak" of cicada hit Perry county last year. We observed and even photographed about eight species of birds eating cicadas, including cuckoos. Others included great crested flycatchers and cedar waxwings and woodpeckers and my chickens. I would pick them off the trees, hostas, etc every morning and feed the to the chickens. They loved them. So did the fish in our pond. Our dogs even "grazed" on them regularly. About the only thing that didn't eat them was me.
We picked thousands, but the damage to the trees was still quite extensive. Virtually no acorns or walnuts produced. By the way, this year the bloom has been incredible on everything in the woods, and I expect an awesome "mast" crop. However, there appear to be fewer cuckoos around, but I did hear a yellow-billed singing most of the afternoon today.

Over the last five days, that faint buzzing has become a full blown chorus of cicadas, getting louder each day. Knowing how much cuckoos love cicadas, this morning I ventured to Englewood Metropark and heard both species calling. So, I am curious, have other of you noticed an uptick in cuckoos with the cicada "outbreak" (I can never remember the correct term). And what other birds might we be on the lookout for that also love to feast on cicadas, maybe a kite, perhaps a shrike? I'd love to hear thoughts from others on this subject.
