How cool was it of the Firestone-Yeagley Wildlife Area Glossy Ibis to make its accommodating visit during the weekend, giving great and easily seen views to many birders. For some, this beautiful iridescent chestnut and green breeding plumage adult was a "Life Bird". For myself, it was one of those pinch yourself, birders moments. Only having been home back in Ohio for five days, after six months in Florida on The Gulf Coast, what a way to start spring migration birding, and to be at my own local stomping grounds. The Glossy Ibis was first seen Friday morning about 8:30AM. My purpose of being at the Firestone-Yeagley site that morning was to photograph our local Sandhill Cranes and their two chick size colts, which I later did. Upon my arrival at the parking lot in the pouring down rain, as I began to sip my Dunkin Donuts coffee, lo and behold, what flies right across in front of me, the Glossy Ibis. The weekend saga began. Sometimes it is nice to be at the right place at the right time. This Glossy Ibis is only the second ever sighting in Columbiana County, four were at Highlandtown Lake Wildlife Area for three days in late April, 2007. Not found this morning, Monday, it appears it was last seen on the east side of the road about 5:30PM last night, when it reportedly took flight heading northwest over the cows in the pasture and out of sight . A thank you goes out to the Glossy Ibis, wherever it is, for the several days, three again, that it stopped off in my neck of the woods, adding a little excitement to everyone's weekend. Hopefully if the celebrity visitor is seen again, the finder will report it.
