Hello!

I wanted to take a moment to thank all the folks (although I hope I did so personally to each one too) for responding to my questions about the presence of Whip-poor-wills in Ohio. As I have suspected, it seems that the extreme south and southeast part of the state is the most reliable area for this species in Ohio. Most of the feedback indicates that they are becoming uncommon, if not rare, north of I-70. It also appears that there may be a few exceptions north of I-70 in the eastern unglaciated areas. Last year, Kent Miller had one calling east of Wattsville in Carroll Co, which is not far from northern Jefferson Co. Bob Lane and Jeff Harvey have recently had one in Columbiana Co. It appears that birds in NE Ohio would be very uncommon at this point, again probably rare.

Thank you again for all of your reports, stories, and historical perspectives. We have a vibrant, talented, and engaged birding community here in Ohio.

Happy birding!

Jon Cefus
Carroll Co.
