JULY 01, 2017 - CUYAHOGA VALLEY MONTHLY TOWPATH TRAIL CENSUS.
HIKE: Towpath Trail from Red Lock Trailhead south to Merriman Valley,
including stops at Trail Mix in Peninsula and Szalay's Farm Market.
TIME: 6:00am - 3:20pm  TEMP.: 66 ~ 86 ~ 85  COND.: Cloudy and overcast with
a front from the west; light mist falling intermittently from 10:35am to
12:35pm; clouds/sun mix rest of day, turning very warm late and S/SW
breezes.
TRAIL COND.: Wet, soggy, many puddles and standing water from yesterday and
overnight thunderstorms.  RIVER COND.: High, swift, and muddy, few exposed
rock and sandbars from yesterday and overnight thunderstorms; all small
creeks and runs fast-flowing to the Cuyahoga River.  FT.MI.: 13.63  OBS.:
John Henry and Douglas W. Vogus.

I. MAMMALS: 8 SPECIES, 35 TOTAL.

   1. Eastern Cottontail - 1
   2. Eastern Chipmunk - 19
   3. Woodchuck - 1
   4. Red Squirrel - 3
   5. Common Muskrat - 1
   6. Common Raccoon - 3  (New Census High - previous was 2 on 05/2012 &
   06/2015)
   7. Striped Skunk - 2 (young)  (New Census High - previous was 1 on
   08/2016)
   8. White-tailed Deer - 5 (2 doe,3 fawn)


II. BIRDS: 70 SPECIES, (July avg. is 71.4 Species since 2010), 1,002 TOTAL,
(July avg. is 1,116.8 Total Birds since 2010.)
(NOTE: m = male; f = female; ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was
heard calling but not seen)

   2. Wood Duck - 26 (1m,9f,16 ducklings)
   3. Rock Pigeon - 1
   4. Mourning Dove - 8

   6. Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 2 (1f,1?)

   8. Spotted Sandpiper - 6 (3 juvenile)
   9. Ring-billed Gull - 4   (First July Record on Census)
   10. Great Blue Heron - 15
   11. Green Heron - 4
   12. Turkey Vulture - 17
   13. Red-shouldered Hawk - 1
   14. Broad-winged Hawk - 1
   15. Belted Kingfisher - 2 (m)
   16. Red-headed Woodpecker - 1
   17. Red-bellied Woodpecker - 4 (1m,1?,2* - 1 nest in a dead snag)
   18. Downy Woodpecker - 9 (1m,1f,7*)

   20. Northern Flicker - 6 (1m,1f,1?,3*)
   21. Pileated Woodpecker - 1 (*)
   22. Peregrine Falcon - 2 (1m,1f)  ("Trailblazer" gave "Gatewood" a fresh
   kill and she took it up under the Ohio Turnpike bridge - unknown if nesting)
