Last night there was a nice little movement of 15 Common Nighthawks over my Upper Arlington neighborhood. They came in from over the OSU campus and headed southwest.
Tonight I went out to count Chimney Swifts. The tall stack at the high school used to host close to 1500 swifts during the peak of migration, but it appears that the chimney has been capped. I have wondered where the swifts are going as an alternative. I visited a local church that has a small, one-story chimney. During the summer, I counted around 70 swifts using the chimney. The most I have counted there in past years is around 100. Tonight I counted a staggering 620 swifts enter the chimney.
This is a good time to check local stacks and chimneys, and to be outside after 8:00 pm to look for Common Nighthawks.
