Thanks to Jon Cecfus for this important reminder about basic ethics in birding.

When Karin Tanquist and I were on-site with the Sooty Tern early Saturday, an individual walked from his pick-up truck parked along Bair Road all the way around the gravel pit pond until he was on the small peninsula of land that juts out close to the pipe upon which the Sooty was roosting. He sat down with the sun more at his back and took close-up photos for as long as we were there.

Unfortunately, we had to leave and could not stay any longer so as to be able to talk to him about this bold trespassing and quite flagrant breach of birding ethics in search of a better photo. In retrospect, I should have at least pinned a note on his pickup and regret that I did not think to do that. It is a good lesson for all of us to find ways to be constructive and pro-active in being good birders.

Kind regards,
Patrick Coy

Subject: Sooty Tern update: please read

Hello all!

It's come to my attention that some people are getting too liberal in their parking and proximity to the gravel pit at the Sooty Tern location near Dover.

Here's the ONLY place it's ok to be: right next to your car with it pulled off along Bair Rd. Not down the gravel road by the barn and not pulled in facing the pit. (I've personally seen these).

Please use common sense, respect private property, and try to represent the birding community ethically.

Regards,

Jon Cefus
