Hi,

Two more mornings of color banding Dark-eyed Juncos this week. Yesterday,
here in my yard on Gildersleeve Mountain, (one of our 4 study sites) we
banded two individuals. Very easy because I have a very good idea of their
territories and nest sites. Both birds were in the net within 15 seconds
of starting the recording. We also saw a previously banded bird but there
is no reason to re capture him.

Then this morning we worked the north rim of Stebbin's Gulch and got 3
birds. These took a lot more patience. Unlike other sites Stebbins has
proven far more tricky. It often takes a long time to get a bird to
approach, before going into the net. In fact one of today's birds was
foraging on the ground by the net, an indication of not actively defending
territory, and it was only when I moved to look to see if he was already
banded that he flushed into the net. We think he had already visited at
two other netting sites and looked to just be curious. We do have a good
idea of his actual territory from watching his approach and retreat and had
been planning on setting up in that area but did not after catching and
banding him where we did.

So far this season we have banded 11 new individuals in 2 weeks in 4
locations. We had 10 individuals last year, so now we have doubled out
sample. Hoping to get females and fledglings too this season.

Haans
Kirtland
