The following message will be posted to all Miami users of Microsoft Mail
shortly after 12 noon today:

[Forwarded message begins]

Miami Computing & Information Services (MCIS) respectfully requests that
Miami users of Microsoft Mail *not* send general mass mailings across the
MSMail (or any other e-mail) network. (MCIS apologizes to all MSMail users for
having to send *this* general mass mailing to show what we're asking you *not*
to do ...)

Sending messages to all MSMail users, or even to large numbers of MSMail
users, places a severe strain on the Microsoft Mail network, occasionally
causing portions of it to fail and consistently causing individual computers
using MSMail to crash when such messages are distributed.

General mass mailings to all Microsoft Mail users (who as a group
constitute only a portion of the University's e-mailing community) are to be
used only in cases of University emergencies, and then only by the Miami
University News Bureau.

MCIS is working on developing tools for systematically communicating with
various constituent sections of the University. Until such tools become
available, postings to various Miami University specific NetNews newsgroups
constitute the recommended means of communicating electronically to the
University at large. Miami's NetNews hierarchy (mu.*) is now accessible via
World Wide Web (WWW.MUOhio.Edu) by selecting "News" at the top-level menu.

Please direct any questions or concerns to the MCIS Help Desk (by
electronic mail at [log in to unmask] or by telephone at 529-7900) and ask
that your call be queued to the Campus Wide Information Systems (CWIS)
Coordinator. Thank you.

John B Harlan
Campus Wide Information Systems (CWIS) Coordinator

P.S. This message is being distributed shortly after noon, in the hope that
sending it during the lunch hour will minimize any negative effects.
Previously, MCIS has contacted senders of mass mailings individually, hoping to
discourage such mailings without the necessity of employing the offending mass
mailing mechanism itself to do so. However, as the incidence of mass mailings
seems to be increasing, announcing the undesirability of mass mailings has
become necessary.

[End of forwarded message]
