There is a special ANSI (ok, ok.. VT-100) sequence that is sent at logon that
puts your cursor at the farthest left & down position, and then asks your termin
al
to return it's coordinates; this is interpreted, and the VAX sets it's displays
(news, editors, WWW) to work with the screen size just determined.
I believe there is also an identification handshake that happens during this
that figures if you're on VT-100/102/220/etc.
Basically, your message is a failed attempt at trying to determine your VT-???
setup and screen size. I've run terminal programs before that didn't support thi
s,
so here's what I've figured out.
First off, the 'ANSI setup' can be invoked from the command line with:
$ set terminal/inquire
Which will do the above procedure. If this fails, try checking your emulation
setup; there might be some radio button or gadget that enables a better emulatio
n.
If not, you can individually tell the terminal about your screen.
$ set terminal /width=XX /page=YY /ansi_crt
where XX is the width of your screen, and YY is the height (# of lines) of
your screen. If you use gold keys, you'll probably have to add
/application_keypad to that string. Check out the options by doing help
on 'set terminal'.
Hope that helps..
