Well, I made the trek to Chapel Hill last night. George was playing as
part of the "Songwriter's Alliance" series. It was very laid back,
with each of 5 artists rotating times on stage playing 2-3 songs.
George played acoustic 12 string and was accompanied by Johnny from
Queen Sarah Saturday on lead and slide. I think they had just rolled
in from NY and were a little tired and Johnny had the flu. George even
performed an impromptu song about the flu while Johnny made his way to
the stage. But they seemed to be in good spirits, laughing, etc.
George opened up with an as-yet-untitled new song with a sort of
hillbilly yodel refrain, different but good. Then he played Freeman
and Comfort Home. His next set was Tammy, I'll see you there, and Love
Hurts(Everly Bros, Nazareth) The last set was the "flu" song, another
new tune with "dig it" in the chorus, and, after some convincing Catch
Fire, which he joked that he hated playing. As they were packing up, I
asked him to sign my Brain Junk and asked about the new Connells CD.
He said the date had been set for JULY 8, but that it would probably
change. (I assume for the worse as nobody changes a release date to
earlier) He told me the title too, but DAMMIT, I forgot it! It's
something like "Junk Food and other distractions" I know that's not
it, but it's close. Also he said they would be opening up for Tommy
Keene at the Brewery on 2/23. When he said it I was pretty sure "they"
was the Connells, and I was surprised they would be the opening band at
such a tiny venue, but now I think "they" might be George and Johnny.
But in either event I'll be there.
