For what it's worth: My Mac (Powermac 6100/66, Running MacOS 7.5 and Open
Transport 1.1) will wait ad infinitum for authentication. When we were
having the nasty problems a few weeks ago, I would just leave it parked,
and I would eventually get logged in, though it sometimes took well over
an hour.

What sucked about that is I think the 5 hour time limit is modem
connection time based, not PPP connection based, so I was already into my
5 hours by the amount of time I waited.

It's been pretty quick lately, though.
