Much as I would like to let this issue die a dignified death, I must say
that it didn't require propagandizing, record-company-generated or
otherwise, to turn me off vinyl and onto CD. All it required was for me to
put the first CD I ever bought on the player, step back six paces, and hit
"play" on the remote. The result was like aural orgasm. I have never
looked back. I left behind 10 years of vinyl-listening without hesitation
or regret.
I grant vinyl-o-philes' preference for the "warmth" or "depth" or whatever
the hell it is that LPs supposedly have, but the bottom line is, that
warmth is SIGNAL NOISE, added BY THE MEDIUM and not by the engineer. You
are not hearing what was recorded. I'll take my chances with the artist's
and producer's original intentions.
