One of the motives behind the creation of the United Friends of
Temperance was resentment in the South over the politicizing of the
Good Templars and other temperance fraternal societies. The UFT
began without any requirement that members commit themselves to
support prohibition. What subsequently happened at the state level
(in Texas and elsewhere) I don't know. Indeed the history of the
fraternal temperance societies in North America is patchy at best.
For the UFT I know of nothing better than the few pages in Scomp's
near contemporary history of the Georgia temperance movement.
