art world are the confiscation by the Nazis of art treasures during World
War Two, and the purchase of many European artworks by Japanese collectors
the Asian economic boom. In her new book "Portrait of Doctor Gachet
(gash-AY)" (Viking) Cynthia Saltzman traces the history of this Van Gogh
masterpiece and shows how both these issues have affected the portrait
since it was painted in 1890
