Globe editor and International Secretary of the IOGT Derek
Rutherford provides a short article
on the past and present of IOGT International ("the largest secular
temperance organisation--worldwide") in no. 2, 1998 issue.
("Celebrating 130 Years of IOGT Global Action," pp. 22-23)
Rutherford notes that at its 64 World Congress, August 1998,
delegates are expected from 60 countries located on four continents. "The
[original] name 'Good Templar' had an old-fashioned ring and it has
given place to IOGT International. Whilst there is no longer
uniformity in its methods of work and organisation from country to
country, iti has remained true to its principles of Temperance,
Peace, and Brotherhood." Ruterhford goes on to say that "although
its membership is weak in North America and Western Europe (other
than in Sweden, Norway, and Germany), in the Baltic States, Central
and Eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia, IOGT is on the advance." For
instance, in 1996 the IOGT for the first time in its history held an international
conference on the African continent.
