The Cincinnati Post, Tuesday, Feb. 23
Op-ed by Allan Winkler (history) says the saddest thing about two
African-American students being arrested in connection with the Oct. 30
incident at the CBCL is that it came at a time when Miami was taking some
important steps forward.

In 1998, several national publications recognized the excellence of Miami's
Oxford, Hamilton and Middletown campuses.  People in those three cities
also know the university's commitment to the community.  Mentions Marcia
Baxter-Magolda (education leadership) being named one of 80 "Post, Present
and Future Leaders," the success of McBride Hall, three alumni helping to
free an innocent man, money raised for hurricane relief by Ramon Layera
(Latin American studies), recycling efforts and Phillip Shriver (history)
retiring from teaching after 52 years.  Quotes Miami president James
Garland.

Miami University and became a lawyer.

Dayton entrepreneur Loyd Richards told about three dozen students at
Miami-Hamilton that obstacles can be overcome.  His talk was part of the
campus' Black History Celebration.

Darrell S. Bell II (Miami-MIddletown student) testified in his father's
trial Tuesday.  His father is accused of sexually molesting his daughter.

More than 1,000 top high school seniors from around the world will compete
for $8 million in scholarship aid at the University of Cincinnati Saturday
by participating in UC's Cincinnatus Scholarship Competition.

The NCAA scored a legal victory Tuesday when the Supreme Court ruled the
organization is not subject to a federal sex-bias law just because it
collects dues from federally financed colleges and universities.
