The QuickTime Player included with QuickTime 4 Public Beta seems to open
some MP3 audio files but not others. Why is this?

DISCUSSION

QuickTime 4 Public Beta should support the majority of currently available
MP3 audio files. However, QuickTime 4 Public Beta supports CBR (constant
bit rate) MP3 encoding only. Some newer encoders employ VBR (variable bit
rate) encoding. QuickTime 4 Public Beta will not play MP3 audio files
encoded with VBR.
