Miami University trustees on Friday unanimously voted to drop three men's
varsity sports--soccer, tennis and wrestling--following months of debate
over the school's efforts to comply with the federal Title IX law and to
balance its athletic budget.  The golf program was saved after coach Rodger
Cromer raised more than $722,000 in cash and pledges, enough to set up an
endowment fund to pay for his sport.  Various papers quote Joel Maturi
(athletic director), wrestling coach Chuck Angello, Miami wrestlers, soccer
coach Bobby Kramig, Holly Wissing (news and public information) and Miami
president James Garland.

Miami University trustees on Friday gave preliminary approval to a 4.9
percent increase in tuition and fees at the Oxford campus for the 1999-2000
school year.

Miami University's equestrian team is heading for the nationals--in part
because of an outstanding effort by a Greenville woman.  Alison Bobillo
competed after tearing something in her knee during a broomball game three
days earlier.  Bobillo's participation and the resulting blue ribbon was
vital to allow the team to qualify for the national event.  Quotes coach
Jim Arrigon.

Venequelan flutist Huascar Barradas will present a recital of Latin
American and Venequelan music Thursday at Miami University.

Randy McNutt's column talks about curators at Miami University's science
museums who will be available to inspect and identify all kinds of
specimens today at the Hefner Museum and "Oxford 1851-52: A Living
Experience," in which Miami University students research the histories of
local characters and portray them in period dress.

Randy Sandler, owner of Cincinnati Art Gallery, will speak Sunday at the
Miami University Art Museum.

The Techno Spectacle held at Miami University Middletown campus, offered
fair goers a glimpse of computers beginning from the original calculator,
an abacus, to having the opportunity to dance with the king, Elvis Presley.

Weekend section features winners of the 8th annual Make A Difference Day
Awards.  Winners include twin brothers Jeffrey and Frank Griffiths who
attend Miami University and University of Virginia respectively. The
brothers graduate next year, but student organizations at each school have
adopted Make A Difference Day as a long-term cause.  The colleges'
presidents are also talking about adopting the two-campus rivalry.

Story about the first-ever Butler County Job Fair quotes Shelley Cassady,
director of placement at Miami University Hamilton and one of the job fair
organizers.

Miami University's physical facilties department has been awarded a $23,498
grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to expand the
university's recycling program in residence halls.  The project will be
administered at Miami  by Stacy Edmonds (associate recycling coordinator)
and Steve Gaski (director of building and special services).  Quotes Gaski.

One of the new exhibits at this year's "History Lives...in Butler County"
is the Beta Theta Pi Museum and Archives.  The display will include a
collection of artifacts and pictures that document the organization's
history, the community at Miami University and the American fraternity
experience.

Miami University freshman Whitney Ward has been included in Who's Who Among
American High School Students.

College Planning for Juniors, sponsored by the Talawanda High School
Guidance Department and the admissions office of Miami University, will be
April 29 at Talawanda High School.

Tom Romano (teacher education) will lead a session on haiku, a Japanese
poetry format, at a two-day writers symposium hosted by Liberty Junior
School.
