A jury of five men and three women was seated Monday in Butler County Area
I Court for the trial of seven current and former Miami University students
charged with disorderly conduct.  The students were arrested Nov. 11 after
a protest against the university's reaction to an Oct. 30 incident in which
numerous racial and anti-homosexual fliers were placed in the university's
Center for Black Culture and Learning.

As legal proceedings against seven current and former Miami University
students began inside the Area I Court Monday, a small group of protesters
gathered outside at a free speech demonstration.  Quotes Miami graduate

About 10 people demonstrated peacefully in front of the Oxford Courthouse
Monday in support of seven Miami University students who are on trial for
criminal charges stemming from a public protest of a racial incident last
year.  Quotes Miami graduate student Carol Tyson, one of the
demonstration's organizers.

Story about the trial of seven current and former Miami students charged
with disorderly conduct also said the trial of Brad Allen and Nathaniel
Snow, who are accused of posting racial messages in the Center for Black
Culture and Learning, will be starting soon.

Dayton Daily News, Tuesday, July 20
Opinion piece by Amy Kunz (alumna) about the media coverage of John F.
Kennedy Jr.'s plane crash says all afternoon (Saturday) and with almost no
commercial breaks, the networks rehashed the little information they had
into hour after hour of exhaustive coverage.  Kunz also says these stories
are not fodder to fatten up network ratings.

In an editor's note about deciding on a college, Pam Thomas says the reason
she ended up at Miami University is because "it was beautiful, safe and a
bargain for out-of-staters."

The Middletown Journal, Saturday, July 17
Opinion column by James Ewers (student affairs, Middletown campus) about
grandparents says people should get to know their grandparents because it
will open up another whole chapter of their life.
