Minority enrollment the past 10 years has almost doubled at Miami
University's Oxford campus, but the university is hoping a media blitz will
accelerate those gains.  MORE--Multicultural Opportunities for Reaching
Excellence--is the broadest effort yet to recruit multicultural students to
Miami University, according to university officials.  Quotes Miami
President James Garland and Harold Brown (multicultural admissions and
enrollment).
And:
Robert Perless' sculpture, "Miami Aurora," was installed on a hilltop near
Hoyt Hall at Miami University last week.  The sculpture has been financed
by Ohio's Percent for Art legislation, which provides funds for the
acquisition, commissioning and installation of original works of art for
new or renovated public buildings that receive state appropriations.
Quotes Lynne Wagner (planning and construction), who served as chairwoman
of the selection committee.

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Miami University a three-year
$570,000 grant to advance the modeling and mentoring of technology
integration by Miami education professors.  The grant will provide funding
for Miami's Project Mentor.

"Family Fun Day" for children in kindergarten through fifth grade is
offered Sunday at the Miami University Art Museum.

A look into Butler County folklore includes the story of Miami student Ron
Tammen who disappeared in 1953 and has never been found.  Quotes Phillip

The new Talawanda Web site allows visitors to link to six points of
interest in the district: the Board of Education, Talawanda High School,
Talawanda Middle School, Kramer Elementary, Marshall Elementary and Stewart
Elementary.  There is a link to other places, including Miami University.

Dayton Daily News, Sunday, Oct. 31
Wilmington College and some other Miami Valley colleges are enjoying not
only a healthy freshman class, but also fewer dropouts.  Chart show the
enrollment for Miami Valley colleges, including Miami University, in '97,
'98 and '99.

Local colleges are scrambling to keep up with the boom in electronic
commerce, seeking to prepare their students and Miami Valley businesses for
what is shpaing up to be the most powerful marketing tool of the next
decade.  Miami University will host a conference titled "Education and
E-business: Partners for the Future."  Quote Linda Crider (co-director,
Interactive Media Studies) and Daniel Short (business school dean).

Students from several Ohio colleges and universities, including Miami, were
arrested during Halloween weekend at Ohio University.

The corncrib sculpture "Temple of the Sibyl," winner of 1999 outdoor
sculpture competition, can be seen in front of Presser Hall until May.

Author and former Hamilton High principal John Lazares, Miami '72, is
promoting his book "Please Don't Call My Mother" and will return to his
hometown Nov. 15.  A reception for him will be held at Miami Hamilton's
library.

Miami University Hamilton offers an "Internet for Seniors" class in November.

Anthropologist Payson Sheets will speak on "Tropical Time Capsule: The
Ceren Site in Central America" at the Miami University Art Museum Wednesday
night.

Photo of Norma Evans (mailroom and switchboard, Hamilton campus) passing
out candy to two children from the campus day care center.  The children
visited offices around campus Thursday afternoon.

WMUB, Monday, Nov. 1
Pam Fox (dean of Fine Art) gave the Artsline commentary on classical but
nontraditional pianist Awadagin Pratt, whose concert at Hall Auditorium is
tomorrow.

Workshop presenters at the fourth annual Ohio Kentucky Indiana Children's
Literature Conference Nov. 13 include Christopher and Lynne Myers of
Dragonfly magazine (both interdisciplinary studies).

Story about NuBlend Paints, who takes old left over paint and reblends it
to be reused, says Miami University is their biggest customer.

A group of ment who were turned away from a college Halloween party early
Sunday opened fire on the small house, killing one man and wounding five
others.  About 100 people had packed into the house after a Ball State
University fraternity party.

The Cincinnati Post, Saturday, Oct. 30
Looking to retain more of its black students, the University of Cincinnati
will host a weeklong "initiation" event in November to celebrate the
school's black history while providing freshmen with a formal "rite of
passage into higher education."
