The Detroit News, Sunday, Dec. 19
Major-university sports programs rake in increasingly large pots of cash
from television contracts, but second-tier leagues such as the Mid-American
Conference are forced to exist on the kindness of others, a Detroit News
study of federal financial reports has found. The 12 schools in the MAC
lost more than $52 million on their combined sports programs in the school
year ending last June, and most of the shortage was covered by the
universities' taxpayer-supported general funds, student activity fees and
alumni gifts. Marshall University had the smallest loss at $2.2 million
and Miami University lost the most with $6.3 million. Also says the flood
of red ink has hampered efforts to give women athletes an equal share.
