A bonus day - 67 degrees and bright sunshine in late November? Unheard of! I was able to spend the morning birding East Fork Lake State Park (DeLorme pg 75, D6) with members of the Cincinnati Bird Club. As seems to be the case, the gorgeous weather meant the birding was less than stellar, but I had a really nice day and the relatively low number of species did not ruin my enjoyment. After all, it was a "4 woodpecker day," and I consider anything over 3 woodpecker species to be pretty good! My trip list: Common Loon Horned Grebe Pied-billed Grebe Mallard Lesser Scaup Ruddy Duck American Coot Ring-billed Gull Bonaparte's Gull Great Blue Heron Killdeer Belted Kingfisher Pileated Woodpecker Red-bellied Woodpecker Common Flicker Downy Woodpecker American Crow Blue Jay Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse White-breasted Nuthatch Carolina Wren Cedar Waxwing Dark-eyed Junco Northern Cardinal Eastern Towhee White-throated Sparrow Field Sparrow Swamp Sparrow American Tree Sparrow Song Sparrow American Goldfinch Back at home, my bird feeder bird list included: Mourning Dove Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Blue Jay Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse Carolina Wren Eastern Bluebird Dark-eyed Junco Northern Cardinal White-crowned Sparrow Song Sparrow House Finch American Goldfinch Eliminating the duplicates gives me a total for today of 36 species. Conspicuous by their absence were raptors, turkey vultures, and Canada geese. I missed the brown creeper, golden-crowned kinglets, yellow-rumped warbler, and red-breasted mergansers. Thankfully, no starlings or house sparrows! Hope you were able to enjoy this glorious day, Kathi Hutton Felicity, Clermont Co.
