Dave Dister asked if I could post this for him: "This past Sunday (Nov. 26) I counted 81 dunlins in the estuary west of the Ottawa NWR impoundments (Lucas County) and down at the St. Marys Fish Hatcheries (Auglaize County) I found 3 least sandpipers in basic plumage." If I'm correct, Dave had the dunlins in the Crane Creek estuary, probably in the wide part not far east of the bridge. The estuary has not been visited as often as it should be, as it clears out with W and SW winds and can host phenomenal numbers of shorebirds, the ones that used to show up at what is now Lake Metzger. Paul Sherwood recently mentioned having witnessed such a blow-out this year on 17 Oct,with spectacular results. Dunlins numbering in four figures were seen there last Nov and the Nov of 2004.
