I was enjoying the pleasant afternoon outdoor weather with a neighboring
farmer when I was surprised by his comment "look, Look, LOOK" with extended
finger. By the second 'look' I had directed my sight to my machinery
storage barn and observed an American Kestrel dart from the barn with a
sparrow in it's talons. I have watched those beautiful Kestrels hawk
insects on countless occasions. And I have seem them rise from a field with
a mouse or vole in their talons after that 'hold my breath' hover maneuver.
But this was the first time I had observed one doing what their colloquial
name tells us, being a 'Sparrow Hawk'.

I did not observe the Kestrel dive into the machinery barn but I sure did
see it leaving, lunch in talon, via the large open door.

Cordially,
Tom (smitten by any bird with talons) Slater
