Hi Everyone, Beth and I joined four other KBCers for a weekend on Kelleys Island. Although our species count wasn¹t as high as some other folks had gotten in recent weeks, we had a terrific time, we saw some great birds, and we even got in a little bit of botanizing to accompany the birding‹and of course, we thoroughly enjoyed the company. On Friday, bound for KI, in addition to the predictable Red-tailed Hawks along I-90, we had a Red-shouldered Hawk in Lorain County, which is quite unusual for us. We stopped at the Medusa Marsh area on the way. Not that much going on, but we had: Pied-billed Grebe Great Blue Heron Gadwall (80+) Mallard American Coot in large numbers Dunlin (one fly-by flock of about 20) Ring-Billed Gull Red-winged Blackbird (one flock of over 100‹we had also seen a couple of large flocks, presumably also red-wings, from the highway) House Sparrow On Kelleys Island, birding most of the day Saturday and Sunday morning, we had: Common Loon Horned Grebe Double-crested Cormorant Great Blue Heron Turkey Vulture Canada Goose Mallard Lesser Scaup (1 female) Surf Scoter (three) Long-tailed Duck (1 female) Bufflehead Common Goldeneye (1 female) Red-breasted Merganser Ruddy Duck Cooper's Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Merlin Bonaparte's Gull Ring-billed Gull Herring Gull Great Black-backed Gull (1) Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Blue Jay American Crow Black-capped Chickadee Brown Creeper (3) Carolina Wren (quite a few) Golden-crowned Kinglet (the trees were dripping the kinglets, as well as tree sparrows and juncos) Eastern Bluebird (a flock of 25+) American Robin (100s) European Starling American Pipit Cedar Waxwing Yellow-rumped Warbler American Tree Sparrow Savannah Sparrow (1) Fox Sparrow (1) White-throated Sparrow Dark-eyed Junco Northern Cardinal Rusty Blackbird (1) Common Grackle House Finch American Goldfinch House Sparrow In addition, others in our group had: Northern Harrier Ruby-crowned Kinglet Common Merganser (1 female) And other birders reported Greater Yellowlegs Most of the flowers were gone, of course, but we saw a few interesting things, and collected some Gray Sunflower seeds‹we¹ll see how that works outŠ Best wishes, Steve Cagan Cleveland Hts ----- Steve Cagan, photographer [log in to unmask] 216-932-2753 www.stevecagan.com www.pbase.com/stevecagan ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
