Hi all - This morning Ray Hannikman, Jerry Talkington, and Larry Rosche (and others?) had an absolutely outstanding 'lakewatch' from Mentor Lagoons (west of Headlands Beach State Park). Here's info regarding Mentor Lagoons: http://www.cityofmentor.com/parks/lagoons.shtml This is merely a 2nd hand report, and hopefully Ray will report more clear totals later, but for now, check this out: MENTOR LAGOONS (ML) Among the highlights was at least one female KING EIDER and 'hundreds' of SCOTERS of all three species, with Surf dominating, Black Scoters abundant as well, and much lesser numbers of the more uncommon White-winged. A group of 4 (four) HARLEQUIN DUCKS were observed in flight together, and eventually dropped into the large scoter flocks. At least 20+ LONG-TAILED DUCKS were observed, and I would suggest that that is a lower total than what was really observed. Massive numbers of Red-breasted Mergansers were moving, along with much smaller, but nonetheless interesting numbers of Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, and Ruddy Duck. At least one flock of 200 or so scaup were seen off ML. Also, at least 2 RED-THROATED LOONS were found. A single JAEGER species was observed at ML also. AGAIN, here's the highlights from Mentor Lagoons: - at least 2 Red-throated Loons - single JAEGER species - female KING EIDER - four HARLEQUIN DUCKS - 20+ LONG-TAILED DUCKS - large numbers of SURF SCOTERS, with BLACK SCOTERS, and fewer WHITE-WINGEDs - massive numbers of Red-breasted Mergansers, along with lesser numbers of Bufflehead, goldeneye, Ruddy Ducks, pintail, etc. Quite a round-up. FAIRPORT HARBOR East of Mentor Lagoons, three (3) PURPLE SANDPIPERS were observed on the breakwalls at Fairport Harbor. I do not have the proper names of the observers who found these three purple jettie-lovers, so perhaps that will be clarified later as well. Ok then, good birding. cheers Jen Jen Brumfield [log in to unmask] Akron, OH _________________________________________________________________ Fixing up the home?
