On some winter evenings I would see large flocks of crows in south Columbus headed somewhere as Casey describes. I haven't seen them since I switched routes home from work several years ago. Also several years ago during a walk I happened upon hundreds of crows grazing in a grassy field midday in Columbus (in the vicinity of where I would see the flocks flying). Some of them flew up and swirled closely over my head and sounded very annoyed trying to intimidate me while the rest continued foraging. The next day I went for a walk in the same area and noticed thousands of shallow holes where the crows had dug up or looked for shallow insects. It almost looked like someone had run a soil aerator over the area. The West Nile Virus took its toll on crows and blue jays here in central Ohio but I am starting to see somewhat of a comeback. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
