Hi all, I had a Merlin at Green Lawn Cemetery on the south side of Columbus today, when canvassing that area for the Columbus Christmas Bird County today. It was actively hunting, and may be around for a while. I did get some photos, and will eventually stick one up on my blog. The bird was in the immediate vicinity of the pond in the center of the cemetery. Hopefully this Merlin will join the ranks of all the other Ohio Merlins wintering in large urban cemeteries. Big thanks to Lori Brumbaugh for relocating the Western Tanager one street to the south of where it has normally been seen. We saw it there about 12:15 today, so the bird is still alive and well and in the area. And is undoubtedly the first Western Tanager to actually be tallied for a Christmas Bird Count in Ohio! Yesterday on the Beaver, Ohio CBC (Jackson County), Jen Sauter and I found a Wilson's Snipe. We also relocated a Gray Catbird that Dave Hess had found the day before. It's been a pretty mild winter so far, so keep an eye out for half-hardy birds like these.
