I was at Kelley's Island yesterday (12/30) I was with my son and in-laws so it was not a "birding" trip, although there were some great birds seen. The best bird was an adult CALIFORNIA GULL at the ferry dock at Marblehead. The bird was amongst the group of gulls that fly out to meet the ferry. I was able to get some identifiable photos of it despite shooting through a chain link fence and fog. On the island, there were a pair of immature HARLEQUIN DUCKS off Long point. Along the southeast corner of the island there was a single PURPLE SANDPIPER. Other birds noted were TURKEY VULTURE and MERLIN. Lots of starlings and robins around. Just walking around I saw and heard at least 10 hermit thrushes. There were hundreds of bufflehead and common goldeneye around the island also. Great numbers when comparing with the amount of waterfowl seen elsewhere along the lake this week.
