Spent the last three days on the island. Below is a list of species observed. The mild weather is still showing in species and species numbers. The Turkey Vulture observed Friday was clearly a young bird with dark bill and head. Hopefully it lives long enough to mature, the cold has to come sometime. Strangely, I could find no Double-crested Cormorants. The European Starling numbers have grown to 110,000. I found their island roost in the NW corner of the island. So this group didn't leave the island as has been observed at other times. Also, the "puddle duck" numbers decline greatly by Friday. It seems they left on Thursday night. The Red-throated Loon has a somewhat different plumage. I got several good photos at close range. This was not a census time so I just birded, hiked, etc. Species numbers are ball-park numbers not actual counts in most cases. 54 species observed. 1 Red-throated Loon (12/28) 6+ Common Loon 6+ Horned Grebe 1 Turkey Vulture (12/29) 300+ Canada Goose 100+ Gadwall 4 American Wigeon 250+ American Black Duck 500+ Mallard 1 Black Scoter - 1 male on 12/28 1000+ Bufflehead 1000+ Common Goldeneye 10+ Common Merganser 1500+ Red-breasted Merganser 2 Bald Eagle (both adults) 1 Cooper's Hawk 3 Red-tailed Hawk 20+ Bonaparte's Gull 30+ Ring-billed Gull 500+ Herring Gull 3 Great Black-backed Gull 1 Mourning Dove 4 Eastern Screech-Owl 5+ Great Horned Owl 2+ Long-eared Owl 7+ Northern Saw-whet Owl 4 Red-bellied Woodpecker 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 12+ Downy Woodpecker 6+ Northern Flicker 3 Blue Jay 40+ American Crow 6+ Horned Lark 50+ Black-capped Chickadee 2 White-breasted Nuthatch 4 Brown Creeper 8 Carolina Wren 2 Winter Wren 20+ Golden-crowned Kinglet 12+ Eastern Bluebird 20+ Hermit Thrush 300+ American Robin 110000 European Starling 6+ Cedar Waxwing 20+ Yellow-rumped Warbler 2 Eastern Towhee 2 Song Sparrow 40+ White-throated Sparrow 12+ Dark-eyed Junco 2 Snow Bunting 20+ Northern Cardinal 12+ House Finch 4+ American Goldfinch 20+ House Sparrow Tom Bartlett Tiffin, Ohio [log in to unmask] ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
