I've been seeing fairly large concentrations of Turkey Vultures in Athens
and Morgan Countys since the new year started. Today on the far East side
of Athens off of SR 50 near Dow Lake (DeLorme 80 B2), I had at least 52
Turkey Vultures up in a swirl, in the trees, and on the banks of SR 50 and
the Hocking River. It must have been windy where they were because it
wasn't the typical tipsy buoyant flight like we usually see; instead they
seemed to be darting around randomly within some trees, at each other and
even higher in the air. I suspected a Black Vulture or two may have been in
this crew stirring it up, but I couldn't locate any. Further East along SR
50/Hocking River corridor between Guysville and Coolville, I easily counted
at least another 20 Turkey Vultures there too. I've not been able to
relocate the all white Turkey Vulture that was spotted near the State Patrol
building in Athens some time ago.
