I hit the 100 mark on Jan 23 with an anticlimatic Turkey Vulture flying over I-71 on my way to Spring Valley, where I picked up 2 more species. I haven't had much time for birding since then, and only picked up one more after that, the Harris's Sparrow in Holmes County. My biggest misses (species that I spent time looking for without luck) were Glaucous Gull, Iceland Gull, and Snow Bunting, but hopefully with this cold weather I'll find them easily sometime this month. I'm not really a lister. I couldn't keep it up for a big year or anything like that, but it was fun to leave the cameras at home for a month and get out with just my scope and binoculars. Here's the list for those who find that kind of stuff interesting : JAN. 1 - Franklin, Pickaway, and Fayette Counties 1 - White-throated Sparrow 2 - American Goldfinch 3 - Carolina Chickadee 4 - House Sparrow 5 - Downy Woodpecker 6 - Northern Cardinal 7 - House Finch 8 - Red-tailed Hawk 9 - Belted Kingfisher 10 - Red-bellied Woodpecker 11 - CarolinaWren 12 - Mourning Dove 13 - Dark-eyed Junco 14 - American Robin 15 - Canada Goose 16 - White-breasted Nuthatch 17 - Blue Jay 18 - Mallard 19 - Herring Gull 20 - Ring-billed Gull 21 - Ring-necked Duck 22 - Hooded Merganser 23 - Rock Pigeon 24 - European Starling 25 - American Crow 26 - American Black Duck 27 - Yellow-rumped Warbler 28 - Brown Creeper 29 - Eastern Bluebird 30 - American Tree Sparrow 31 - Great Blue Heron 32 - Golden-crowned Kinglet 33 - Song Sparrow 34 - Northern Flicker 35 - Northern Harrier 36 - Horned Lark 37 - American Kestrel 38 - Bonaparte's Gull 39 - Black Vulture 40 - Pied-billed Grebe 41 - Red-breasted Merganser 42 - American White Pelican 43 - Northern Shrike 44 - Tufted Titmouse JAN. 2 - Marion, Wyandot, and Hardin Counties 45 - Bald Eagle 46 - Tundra Swan 47 - Gadwall 48 - American Wigeon 49 - Northern Pintail 50 - Red-headed Woodpecker 51 - Eastern Meadowlark 52 - Short-eared Owl JAN. 3 - Franklin County 53 - Common Goldeneye 54 - Northern Mockingbird JAN. 4 - Scioto and Pike Counties 55 - Winter Wren 56 - Eastern Screech-Owl 57 - Hairy Woodpecker 58 - Pileated Woodpecker 59 - Swamp Sparrow 60 - Eastern Towhee 61 - White-crowned Sparrow 62 - Hermit Thrush 63 - Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 64 - Wild Turkey JAN. 6 - Franklin County 65 - Black-crowned Night-Heron JAN. 7 - Lake and Cuyahoga Counties 66 - Great Black-backed Gull 67 - Double-crested Cormorant 68 - Purple Sandpiper 69 - Common Merganser 70 - Black-capped Chickadee 71 - Black Scoter 72 - Surf Scoter 73 - Bufflehead 74 - Lesser Scaup 75 - Greater Scaup 76 - White-winged Scoter 77 - Lesser Black-backed Gull 78 - American Coot JAN. 8 - Madison County 79 - American Pipit JAN. 9 - Franklin and Delaware Counties 80 - Northern Shoveler 81 - Snow Goose 82 - Mute Swan JAN. 10 - Franklin and Pickaway Counties 83 - Redhead 84 - Killdeer 85 - Sandhill Crane JAN. 11 - Lucas County 86 - Canvasback 87 - Ruddy Duck JAN. 12 - Pickaway and Ross Counties 88 - Cooper's Hawk 89 - Great Egret 90 - Ross's Goose JAN. 15 - Franklin County 91 - Merlin JAN. 16 - Muskingum County 92 - Green-winged Teal 93 - Red-shouldered Hawk 94 - Rough-legged Hawk JAN. 18 - Hardin, Hancock, and Franklin Counties 95 - Lapland Longspur 96 - Horned Grebe 97 - Great Horned Owl JAN. 19 - Delaware County 98 - Barred Owl JAN. 22 - Cuyahoga County 99 - King Eider JAN. 23 - Clinton and Greene Counties 100 - Turkey Vulture 101 - Fox Sparrow 102 - Red-winged Blackbird JAN. 29 - Holmes County 103 - Harris's Sparrow Bob Royse Robert Royse [log in to unmask] www.roysephotos.com ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
