I headed up to the Hoover Reservoir this afternoon. I expected to find at least a few spots of open water with waterfowl, but it was still mostly frozen. The only open patch I noticed was from the Sunbury Rd. Bridge where there was no convenient place to stop. Striking out there, I headed a bit eastward to the egg farms between Hoover and Johnstown in Licking County. Tagg Rd. between Westley Chapel Rd. and Roberts Rd. (DeLorme p. 58 C4), where manure was spread a few weeks ago, continues as the most interesting road in the area. The monster flocks of thousands of Horned Larks have dispersed widely throughout the area, but there was a nice flock of ~200 Lapland Longspurs and a couple dozen Snow Buntings on Tagg Rd. The only real sign of spring being around the corner was ~10 or so scattered Turkey Vultures seen in the Hoover/western Licking Co. area.
